The significance of Navratri goes back to ancient times.Mataji’s praises are sung in Navratri.It is believed that in the earlier times, a demon named Mahishasur was very much tormented. He performed deadly penance and pleased AgniDev.Got a blessing that no man can kill.So the divine power fought with this demon for nine days to destroy it and killed it on the tenth day hence Mataji got a name ‘Mahishasur Mardani’.
Navratri is celebrated for nine days.Dussehra is also celebrated on the tenth day with the destruction of demons.During the nine days of Rama Ravana’s battle, Rama was victorious and Ravana was defeated.On the day of Dussehra, a statue of Ravana is made and burnt.Since the victory of Rama, the day of Dussehra is also celebrated as Vijayadashami.
